Cale’s Garden
The quilt pattern
Cale’s Garden was inspired by
Cheryl’s grandson Cale Sweeney, who lived in the dry, desert when the quilt was
designed. Cale liked to nickname his friends and family with fruits and
vegetables, and Cheryl was his “strawberry” and her husband was “that old
carrot”. In the desert garden at his house, Cale fought to keep the many wild
jack rabbits from eating up his plants during the night, so Grandma Cheryl
created a quilt garden for him with rows of kale, strawberries, and carrots. And
the bunnies on his quilt don’t destroy his garden.
The simpler version in the pattern is named for Cale’s little sister and
is called Alivia’s Bunnies. This version requires only two appliqué blocks and
makes use of novelty fabric to create the rows of fruit and vegetables. It’s
easy and quick enough for a weekend project.
Stories to snuggle in with these quilts include the Beatrix Potter
classics:
·
The Tale of Peter Rabbit
·
The Tale of Benjamin Bunny
·
The Tale of Flopsy Bunnies
But the
Suggested Children’s Literature section also includes The Carrot Seed, The Runaway Bunny, and a sweet, touch-and-feel
book, Pat the Bunny.
