About This Website's Name
The
name of my website is derived from some very recognizable words, and
although the Byrds made them immensely popular in a Pete Seeger song
entitled "Turn! Turn! Turn!" in1965, Seeger was not the original
writer. Rather, he borrowed extensively from the King James Version of
the Bible in quoting the beginning of the third chapter of
Ecclesiastes.
While I
love the New International Version of the Bible, there are certain
passages of scripture that are just so beautiful in the KJV. Ecc. 3:1-8
is definitely one of these pieces. For those of you who might be
interested in the entire passage, I have provided it here for your
enjoyment, first in the KJV and then in the NIV. (And for those of you
who didn't already know this, Pete Seeger added the words "turn, turn,
turn". They don't occur in the Biblical passage.)
Ecclesiastes
3:1-8 (KJV)
- To everything there is a season, and a time to
every purpose under the heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to
plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; - A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to
build up;
- A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to
dance;
- A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a
time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
- A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast
away;
- A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time
to speak;
- A time to love; and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace;
